How real place names work
Most English place names have two parts: a description and a place word. Ash + ford was a river crossing by ash trees; Stone + ley was a stony clearing. That is why names like Thistleford or Gravereach sound right on a map: readers know the pattern even if they have never seen the name. Useful place words: -ford (river crossing), -wick (farm or trading place), -ham and -ton (village, farm), -by (Norse village), -mere (lake), -holm (river island) and -haven (harbor).
- Classic: villages and market towns such as Moonvale, Thistleford or Upper Bramreach.
- Elven: song-like cities and glades such as Glimmerfall.
- Dwarven: holds and halls such as Emberpeak and Dorogard.
- Coastal: harbors and fishing villages such as Coralpoint and Port Crowford.
- Grim: cursed or unhappy places such as Gallowmere, Witherfen and Blackbarrow.
Naming a whole map
Keep one style per region so the map tells a story: Norse-sounding names in the cold north, -mere and -fen names in the marshes, -haven and -mouth along the coast. Then break the pattern once on purpose. An elven name in a human valley hints at older history, and players will ask about it. Star the names you like and keep them in a My names list per map or campaign.

Fantasy Town Name FAQ
How do I come up with a fantasy town name?
Combine a feature of the place (Ash, Stone, Salt, Raven) with a place word (-ford, -mere, -haven). The generator does this and adds styles for elven, dwarven, coastal and grim places.
What are good names for a fantasy city?
Cities often keep an old name. Try the Elven or Dwarven styles, or a classic name with a prefix like Great or Old.
Are any of these real places?
Some combinations exist as small real villages. Famous real cities and well-known fictional places are filtered out.
