What a surname tells the reader

A last name is a shortcut to background. Fletcher says a family of arrow makers; Ravencourt says old money; Grimvale says something went wrong. Pick the style that matches where the character comes from, not only what sounds cool.

• Common: place and trade names such as Brightvale, Mossridge or Turner.
• Noble: houses and old families such as Stermont, or double-barreled names like Hartwyn-Cormere.
• Dark: villains, cursed families and gothic heroes: Crowmoor, Grimvale, Vexwood.
• Elven: elvish and nature surnames such as Wildstrider, Starfall or Halloyth.
• Dwarven: clan names such as Steelmantle, Coalbraid or Deepdelve.

Patterns you can use yourself

Four patterns cover most fantasy surnames: landscape + place word (Ash + ford), color + thing (Black + wood), material + craft (Steel + mantle) and a poetic pair (Star + fall). A double-barreled name, two surnames joined by a hyphen, suggests a marriage between two noble houses, which is a ready-made plot hook.

Combine first and last names

Generate first names on the elf, dwarf or human pages, star the ones you like, then star a surname here. Everything lands in the same My names list, so you can mix and match, export the list or print it as a name sheet.

A last name can also carry a story hook. A Ravenwick who hates birds, a poor Goldhand or a Stonehammer family that gave up smithing generations ago gives players and readers something to ask about. Keep one or two of those contradictions per setting so they stay special.
